Whitehaven, a predominantly Black community in South Memphis, Tennessee, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Originally a rural area with a strong agricultural focus, Whitehaven has evolved over time to become a thriving neighborhood with a unique cultural identity. However, despite its historical significance and community pride, Whitehaven has faced significant challenges in recent years. The community has been disinvested and underserved since its annexation into the City of Memphis in 1970, leading to issues such as poverty, lack of access to quality education and healthcare, and limited economic opportunities.

In response to these challenges, Respect The Haven Community Development Corporation (RTHCDC) was founded in 2021 to revitalize the Whitehaven community. Led by Jason Sharif, a lifelong resident of Whitehaven and dedicated community advocate, RTHCDC aims to empower residents through community engagement, education, and economic development initiatives. With a focus on resident empowerment and community-led decision-making, RTHCDC is working to address the systemic issues that have plagued Whitehaven for decades, ultimately striving to create a more sustainable and equitable future for the community.

Key Programs and Initiatives
Respect The Haven Community Development Corporation (RTHCDC) has implemented several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Whitehaven community. One such initiative is the "Don't Trash the Haven - Blight Campaign," which focuses on combating community blight through community engagement and education. The campaign has led to a significant reduction in blighted properties, improving the overall aesthetic appeal of the community and enhancing resident pride.

Another key initiative is the RESPECT Black Education Scholarship, which aims to support local students pursuing higher education. The scholarship program provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to community service. This initiative not only supports individual students but also fosters a culture of academic achievement and community involvement.

The Whitehaven Community Council is another important program, which facilitates monthly stakeholder meetings and utilizes the 7 P’s Stakeholders Model (Parents, Partners, Pastors, Police, Politicians, Principals, Proprietors) for community engagement. This model ensures that all stakeholders are involved in decision-making processes, promoting a sense of ownership and community pride.

These partnerships have led to a more collaborative approach to community development, ensuring that all stakeholders are working together towards a common goal. Additionally, RTHCDC is exploring potential collaborations with programs like the CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) to address health disparities in the community.

Success Stories and Impact

For instance, the blight campaign has resulted in a significant reduction in blighted properties, improving the overall appearance of the community. Challenges and Future Directions
Despite the progress made, RTHCDC and the Whitehaven community still face several challenges. Funding remains a significant issue, and community buy-in is crucial for the success of any initiative. Systemic issues, such as poverty and lack of access to quality education and healthcare, also continue to plague the community.
